YOUTUBE Video

eds evaluation

1)
The media project that we created was a music video for a song that currently doesnt have a video. we used existing media products to gain inspiration for our media project including our digi packs. We aimed to create a video that looked proffesional and would be able to challenge current forms of media. By analysing professional products we were able to see what we had to achieve to create a succesful product which consumers would want to watch and purchase. The proffessional products were from all types of genre, this gave us a wide spectrum of ideas to work with and develop so we could challenge current media forms. We also used theory such as goodwins points, this gave us the knowledge to compose our music video. It also enabled us to set benchmarks of what to achieve whilst creating our project. The genre of our product is romance, we had to watch videos from similar bands as to know what would be expected and what would sell in the real world.

2)
The combination of our main product and the two ancillary tasks work well as a marketing package. the ancillary tasks were designed to promote our music video. they have been created to lure in the potential buyer, all three products compliment each other well and have been designed to from the start. We deliberately used screen shots from our music video because real media forms do this because people are more likely to recognise an image from a video they have watched, it will lure more people in. The image on the front of the digipacks portrays a feeling of glamour and presence, yet it also creates a feeling of sorrow and longing as the artisit looks sad and lonely, this was done to fit in with the song that we chose. The image is successful at attracting our target audience as the ancillary tasks we produced are alluring and draw the attention of potential buyers. they are alluring due to the soft text fonts and colours we used and the image of a girl left alone.

3)
Feedback from people who have viewed our products has been varied with both good and bad points, this is what we expected and hoped for. The initial feedback on our proposed ideas was enthusiastic but slightly skepticle on some of the shots that we aimed to achieve. the feedback from the cough cut highlighted several changes that we needed to do. we wanted critical feedback so we knew what people liked and disliked and how we could possibly alter things to the consumer wants. The final version of the video recieved very positive feedback, wih people agreeing that all previous faults had been adressed and altered with the best possible outcome. Peers who hadnt previously seen the rough cut thought the acting and lip synching was very proffessional and so was the filming and editing techniques that had been used.

Directors Commentary Video

Evaluation of students music video from this year

T1-33

From looking at T1-33 we saw how much effort was put in from the actor and how well they did to make sure the lip syncing was fitting in with the music played. There was a good variety of shots used to represent the artist along with different costumes throughout.  The different lighting and colour used was really good and made it look really professional.

The things we would suggest is possibly a couple more locations and maybe a story line. However overall it is really good and does look like its professional.

Lesson plan 8/11/12

The plan for today was to finish of the last of our directors commentary. Due to needing a extra bit of time we are able to finish it of completely. We also plan to make sure everything is on the blog and put final touches to anything that is incomplete.

7/12/11

As a group we have to carry on editing the music video together to enable us to finish it by the end of the lesson. We have included some of the music under the titles and also added more clips into the evaluation.

Monday 5 December 2011

Lesson Plan 5/12/11

Today we plan to-
  • Add clips from our music video to the time line
  • add images in general of what we have included
  • Attempt to add in some effects

Thursday 1 December 2011

Lesson Plan 2/12/11

Today we had to film our directors commentary in one of the studios. Charlotte and Chris had created a script which we were to follow but when it actually came to it, we found it easier to just talk on the spot about what we had achieved whilst creating our music video and ancillary tasks whilst rembering some of the kay points we had put into the script. We covered all aspects from the first ideas to the distribution of our creations. In total we have about 6 minutes worth of talking which will be able to give us enought to be able to achieve are evaluation.

Once we got back to the class room we started to edit together the evalaution. Due to Abbie not being here Chris took her role. We hope for her to be able to do a talk over during next lesson to enable her to be included.

Charlotte Evaluation

1. In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and

conventions of real media products ?

Our music video challenges other forms of music videos through use of different conventions and transitions. The song we chose to do was You are the moon" by The Hush Sound. It is a Indie pop band who produced this slow and sad song.Through planning a lot and developing new and old skills we were able to have a clear vision of what we wanted to produce. We spent a lot of time looking at different music videos such as Beyonce 'Best thing i never had' Adele and Christina Perri  'Jar of hearts'. Through looking at these it gave us inspiration towards what we wanted to include and make.

We also spent a lot time looking at costumes used and what kind of angles and pictures we could include to develop the music video as a whole. After talking to the teachers we had realised that clips needed to be quiet quick and alot of them in order for our audience to keep focused on the music video as a whole. Therefore we went back to basics and looked at what we could include.

Along with this we noticed that the main focus had to be on the singer and alot of close ups of her face needed to be included these tend to be used throughout all music videos. Transitions such as slow motion also enabled to show the past from the present.

Our main aim as a group was to create a professional music video which ran smoothly whilst meeting the aims of the task. We feel that although there were certain things we may have liked to include after feedback we were satisfied we met the needs of our audience along with thinking about the Goodwin's points.

2. How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts?

The main thing we considered whilst doing all three of the tasks was the artist. We knew we had to include her in all 3 and promote them as the main person. As a group we always had clear ideas of what we wanted and although sometimes we had different ideas we worked as a group to pick the best one and get our ideas across.

The images used for the magazine advert and digi pack were taken from the music video itself. At first we did plan to go out and take more professional images which would promote her as an artist however due to difficult circumstances we had to use images from the music video and try are best to make sure they were professional.

We again spent time looking at previous artists magazine adverts and CD covers. Kelly Rowland was the person i researched into and looked at. Are magazine is totally a different feel and image. We knew that if someone saw the advert in a magazine and went to buy it they wouldn't be getting something different in the music video.

We decided to do something different form other groups and use a QR code. This enabled are audience to be able to link back to our website( Blog) and read up-to-date information on The Hush Sound.

3. What have you learnt from your audience feedback?

As a group we were given alot of positive feedback from others. We feel having competition in the class made us plan more and work a lot harder for ours to be the best it could be and well thought out. Our pitch covered nearly all aspects of planning with plans set out for each lesson. The feedback was a great way for us to see what others felt and feel about our music video and get both the good and bad points and improve it ready for the deadline.

First of all we had to rough cut which gave us a real idea of where we could improve and what was going wrong. After watching it back ourselves we saw things we didn't quiet like. Things such as clips being to short and clips not running smoothly. Of course we knew that we needed close ups of Abbie and we really did try hard to get Abbie into the role of the artist. Both Abbie and Ed worked well together with the acting and really made us believe in what we were seeing.

There were also alot of good points like the lip syncing being convincing and our storyline being well thought out. This was all down to good planning and really thinking about every second of the music video.

Again we got comments for our final peace which again some we agreed with and others we didn't. We learnt through talking to nick how clips really do need to be quick and alot of them to keep the audience engaged with what is on screen.

From personal point of view i have learnt how much time it takes to put together the music video and how limited you are to meeting a deadline. I also realised how many clips you had to have to get just one that could go in. As a group we ended up with 100 clips and we only used about 20 and most of them had about 30 seconds of clip used. If i was given the opportunity to add anything to it, it would be more transitions with 3 clips shown at one time.

4. How did you use new media technologies in the construction and research planning and evaluation stages?

We spent a lot of planning and time looking into what kind of transitions we may include and filters on final cut express. It was a struggle at first to work final cut however once we were in the swing of things it became easy. Using this programme enabled us to put together a processional peace of work. If lighting was bad we were able to amend it through this programme to fit into the right sense of feel for the music video. We went on you tube to research into some of the teqniues we may consider to use and these showed us how to make them work on our own work.

The blog was possible the best peace of planning equipment we used. This became the main thing we put ideas and thoughts on. We spent ages updating every last detail we had so that if someone was to read it they would see the idea very clearly. We still even after the work has been done blog what we plan to do in the lessons up to our evaluation in order for us all to be aware of what is happening each lesson.

We were very lucky equipment wise as we were able to have HD cameras and still cameras which enabled us to get high quality images. This made it better for ourselves so when we see it up on the big screen and it has been stretched it wont look bad of fuzzy. This helped us construct our music video together.

Lastly was photo shop, this was used through out digi pack and magazine tasks. This was possibly the worst programme as a group we had to use. We all struggles to get our heads around it. However with a lot of patience and time we managed to put together a peace of work we were happy with. We kept asking for feedback to make sure we were getting our work right and also did research again in to different filters and special effects we could use throughout.

Abbie Evaluation

Chris' Individual Response To Evaluation Questions

1.

The media product that we have created being a music video of 'The Hush Sound - We Are The Moon' develops and challenges the conventions of real media products due to the research, planning and production that we have gone through to produce our music video and this enabled us to appeal to the conventions and target audience of our product and suit the style and genre of the song itself.
When researching different characteristics of real music video products, we established the great need for shot variety and movement and so used and developed the conventions of this within our music video. We also established the importance of Goodwin's Music Video Analysis Points and how they create a more professional and effective music video production.

An important aspect of Goodwin's theory is that there is a strong relationship between the lyrics and the visuals being demonstrated and that the product is in-keeping with the genre characteristics such as having close and extreme close-up shot types being utilised commonly throughout the duration of the Video and also that it is important to add in some inter textual references of the artist(s) and also adding depth by having the singer looking into the camera and as if they are looking out beyond the screen as this creates an effective visual for the viewer and audience for the music video and we thought that it would make the video look more professional.

Due to the genre of our music video being a love song and having an element of romanticism with a slow tempo, the characteristics required within our video were that we used and developed similar conventions to those in real media products that we had previously researched and thought about. We utilised colour effects and filters and created an effect whereby we matched the tempo of the song being slow and the footage that we had captured to create an effective and professional looking part of the music video which worked will in accordance with the music and the lyrics, still continuing to be synced.

2.

The combination of the main music video and the ancillary Digi Pack and Magazine Advert in my view is effective as they all convey a professional looking set of promotion for our products with packaging and an outer casing appealing to the target market and the customers and consumers that we have aimed our products at. We have given and created a consistent view of the style that we are evoking as we ensured that we maintained a house style throughout the separate products to ensure continuity through having consistent font types, colouring and effects and also to ensure that people and the customers can become aware of our style and we can attain some brand/product awareness and association for our product portfolio of The Music Video itself, the DVD and the Magazine Advert.

For the front of the our Digi-Pack and Magazine Advertisement, we used an enticing and alluring image to ensure that the products would stand out and to allow them to be unique and be differentiated from the others in the market place, additionally when going through the planning and development processes looked through a range of font styles to enable us to find a suitable type that would appeal to the conventions of our media product and the genre and also our audience. The effective ancillary products along with our main media product being the Music Video are successful and should attract our target audience due to the layout, the structure and the format to which they have been created with.

3.

After some audience feedback on our Music Video Media Product throughout different stages of our planning, development, planning and distribution process to get a range of viewpoints and opinions from both teacher's and our peer groups and classmates and we have discovered that receiving some construcvtive comments and critisisms from a different range of people has been very effective and useful for us as a group as it has allowed us to develop and create a more professional looking end product because of the feedback.

From the feedback, during the different parts of the process, we have been able to attain comments during the development process, at a rough cut point and then feedback after the final product has been created. At each of these points, we were able to achieve after the points in time a greater variety of more professional shot types, a wider range of locations, more shot movements, effects and also techniques being used.-

4.

Throughout the stages of planning research, development and construction of our media product(s) we have used new media technologies to aid our progress and to allow us to very effectively carry out tasks and create a product of higher quality, with the use of professional standard effects and filters and also with a structured layout and format of timescales, delegation of tasks to carry out on different Mac's or days before which the task was to be completed and we were able to get a good understanding of deadlines and who or what need to be done.

The technologies that we have utilised while creating our Music Video and Ancillary Products enabled us to make a very successful and professional product appealing to our genre and the target audience. Throughout the planning, research, development and contruction stages of the process that we have gone through on the journey to creating our media products we have used Blogger where we have been able to research videos and images and analyse real world media product examples, link and upload footage and ancillary footage and log our progress with feedback as we go along and also to find and create objectives which need to be achieved with time deadlines to allow us to have been structured and organised in our work throughout the different stages of the process.

Additionally we used Final Cut Express for the editing of our footage where we were able to add effects, filters and motion which allowed us to alter timing and transitions within our clips to make them look more professional and give them authenticity and allow us to ensure that they appealed to the conventions of our genre and style that we wished to evoke. We also used Photoshop for photo effects, blurring and for the main production of the Ancillary tasks consisting of the Magazine Advertisement and the Digi Pack. Additionally, while carrying out the filming and creating the footage for our music video we used Sony HD Video Camcorders with fantastic quality and definition and therefore allowing and helping us to film and create clear footage to make a stunning Music Video product which will hopefully be very successful.

Using new technologies for the creation and development of our tasks has really allowed us to create professional looking products with potential in the real world of music and media.

We decided to do something different form other groups and use a QR code. This enabled are audience to be able to link back to our website( Blog) and read up-to-date information on The Hush Sound

Script For Evaluation

Hello, Good Morning/Afternoon/ Evening - We are The Hush Long Road Sound

As a group we have all had different contributions to collaborate and create a professional looking music video. Although at times we found things hard, we still focused on the task and worked together to come to an agreement. Overall we are happy with our music video and will now talk about the planning to distribution process.

1. In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products ? ( Abbie)

Our music video challenges other forms of music videos through use of different conventions and transitions. The song we chose to do was You are the moon" by The Hush Sound. Lesson plan for 28/11/11

Plan for the lesson was to spend and hour writing out our evaluations. We would then each individually upload them and take the best points from each and make it into our script. We would then each individual answer one question each on camera which will give everyone the chance to voice there opinion.

Director's Commentary Definition

A Director's Commentary is a descriptive account from the director of a perfomance/ produced product as it happens or has taken place and an opportunity for them to look back and take into considerartion the glory of hindsite and see what has gone well, maybe not so well and possible improvements for future productions.

This can be seen on the back of DVD's from time to time. They will play the film but the director will speak over it and explain what's going on and why they shot the angle the way they did.

This is an example of a director's commentary for a  TV drama product which shows the type of analysis that we will have to draw from our video and also the split screen idea could work well as a possibility of being able to evaluate our product while showing some of the footage that we have captured.

QR CODE FOR OUR BLOG

Analyse of Kelly Rowland Digipack

Through looking at the Kelly Rowland CD there are certain things about its construction which make it look professional. The images used on the CD are professionally taken and represent the artist very weel. The artist looking at the camera directly which will attract the audience to instantly know who it is. She has what looks like very expensive clothing which shows her music tends to represent over expensive production along with clothing. The Title has been shown and represented as eye catching.

On the back it has the play list of songs which be on it. Along with relevant logos and websites which are involved with the artists herself.

In our ancillary product, the digi pack we hope to use some of the logos already being used in this. We have also tried to represent our artist this way and show a playlist of things included on the disc.

Styles of writing choices

Here shows some of the styles of writing we have tried out for our ancillary task. We felt the type of music fitted into quiet a modern girly style of writing. We tried out 7 types of writing we felt could fit in and tried them all with the picture. We decided after looking at these none of them were good enough. Instead we went for this style:
Here shows the one we went for. We felt this fitted best in with our style of music and with the actors appearance.

Coulour choices for writing

Here shows some of the colour choices we tried out during deciding what would best go over the digi pack and magazine. We felt purple suited it the most with light purples to dark. Below shows some of the types we had tried:

Lesson Plan 23/11/11

Last lesson we focused on the dvd pack, we now have all the iamges and writing on and its matter of playing around with them to get them in the correct position.

This lesson we plan to start are advert for it. Things we know we have to remember are :

  • Keep it similar to the dvd pack we have produced
  • Everyone needs to take it in turns doing the work
  • Some do the blogging and others edit.
  • Remember not to spend to much time on one section
After the lesson we hope to be in a situation where we come in Thursday and do final touch ups on each of them.

Friday 18 November 2011

Lesson Plan for 20/11/11

Due to time being really limited we really need to concentrate on putting together are final peaces of coursework. Things we hope to achieve by the end this lesson:
  • Have the pictures in place where we would like to see them.
  • Have two people working the advert and two doing research into what else can be included.
  • Take on board all the groups ideas and keep thinking about what a DVD cover looks like and not to go of track.
We hope to be in a position where Wednesday lesson we will come in and add on the editing techniques and come Friday we will just be adding the finishing touches.

The Words To Include On The Back

We  plan to add:
  • The Hush Sound- Title
  • ''You are the moon- Music Video''
  • Talking to The Hush Sound
  • Evaluation of the Music Video
  • Director's commentary
  • Comments on Video and ratings from magazines etc.
We also plan to have a small pargraph at the top. For Example:

The newest artist on the block is The Hush Sound. A young girl from a small town in London who has made her way into the spotlight through her dedication to the music industry. With her unique voice and ability to reach out to different groups of people she has enabled herself to be one the most well known people in the country. After only a year of singing on stage she realised her first music video which had hit number 1 in 14 different countries across the world. She is now back with her latest song ' You Are The Moon'.

Things To Include On The Back

These are things we need to include on the back of our DVD digi pack:
This icon is used throughout DVDs we had noticed it was used also on music videos which were able to be used with DVD players. We plan to add this onto the back.
A Barcode will be used, this is used in nearly all DVD and CDs.
We also noticed that the recording company was also used on the back of the cd covers and dvd covers. Here shows a possible logo we plan to use on the back of ours.
We would want to incorporate studio companies such as these examples to comply and appeal to the conventions of previously seen examples of digi packs and music DVD's.

Heres some examples:

or possibly

Different Styles Of Font That We Will Consider

When deciding on the style of writing we want to include we have to choose something that will fit well in with the image. Its not a good idea to choose something bold and wacky if its quiet a girl next door song. We need to take into consideration what other ancillary products use as their type face to give an idea of what mass produced production makes and also think about our colour scheme, our song type and genre so that we make a product that appeals to our audience and our song. So when deciding on the type of writing we will need to look through varies types of writing before making are final dision. Here shows some of the styles we have chosen:

Looking at 'The Hush Sound' Album Covers

Here shows two album covers that The Hush Sound have already realised and used. They have focused on all the band and used them in both the album covers. However, due to our song having only the piano and voice used we feel that it will be best to place the focus on the artist rather than a group style. We plan to focus on Abbie for the front cover and also for our magazine advertisement as we have used her as the main focus in the song and have shot accordingly. We see that the black and white theme fits in very well with both of our ideas and the type of genre that they are in.

The writing on the first image would suit our house style more then the one on the second and this is due to the fact that on the second album cover there is a more contemporary font used whereas similarly to the style that we wish to evoke, the first cover has a more aged and traditional style which would appeal to the type of product that we plan to produce. As you can see though we have gone in a different direction to the way the band itself publishes itself.

After Lesson 18/11/11

As a group we found it really challenging using photoshop. Due to not using the progamme for a while it has taken us time to try and get used to the tools again. Things we have done:
  • We have decided to use a image from the Music video and also we have kept it in colour.
  • On the back it will feature what looks like a film strip running across with photos from the music video in black and white.
  • We have started to include the images and hopefully we will have these done by next lesson.

Ideas For The Cover And DVD

Due to the time being limited for our DVD and Advert task, as a group we have come up with the main ideas that we would like to see for our ancillary products. These are things we need to consider and also remember whilst putting it all together:
  • Possibly a professionally photo taken of the singer not a screen shot from the music video. (so that it is a clear image not fuzzy)
  • Having the background and photos etc in black and white
  • Using editing techniques to prove skills on photo shop
  • Quite a large and bold title
  • Maintaining consistency with the dvd and advert
  • Ensuring that it is relevant to the music video
  • Actually looks like something that we would buy and that potential customers when walking into a music shop would want to look and buy
  • Abbie to be on the front

Analyse Of Video, DVD and Advert

1. The video to The Hush Sounds song Wine Red is set in a very natural scene with alot of greenery and dead plants showing a contrast between old and new. The video shows the band but mainly focusses on the lead singer who is playing a piano covered in moss. The band is always shown against a background and the shots are always medium to close up of them playing there instruments. The video also features a narrative showing an elderly mans thoughts of when he was a younger man with his girlfriend. The CD cover for their album Goodbye Blues shows all the members of the band the colours that have been used are bright but have been grey scaled out, giving it a bit of a grainy/matt look.

An example of an advert for a band is the virgin advert promoting a Maroon 5 album. The advert shows the album cover, the price of the album and the store where you can purchase it from. The advert is meant to promote both the band and the music store that it is in utilising different forms of marketing to promote both parties. They use contrasted colours as to try and draw the attention of the consumer.

Lesson Plan for 17/11/11

Now the music video is out the way we are able to focus on the rest of our coursework. Things we hope to do in tomorrows lesson:
  • See a small presentation from Hollie of past students work.
  • Go out and get pictures of Abbie for the front covers which we are able to use.
  • Look at the type of style we want to use for it.
  • Think about the colours and effects we want to use.
  • Come up with a rough plan of what we would like.
Due to only having 3 lessons to do this, we know we are going to have to work quickly whilst keeping a high standard of work. This means we are going to have to concentrate on the task in hand. Things to remember will be:
  • Make sure it looks like what its meant to be.
  • Keep it unique whilst keeping continuant with the music video.
  • Keep the costume the same.
  • Bare in mind the surroundings.
  • Choose a location which will reflect the music video.
  • Keep it focused on what work we have already done so it doesn't look our of place.

Our Feedback After Reading The Reviews

As a group we have discussed the comments we have been given back from the feedback. We feel some comments wernt particularly constructive however some we feel we agree with and if we had more time we may take action on:

Things we dont agree with:
  • We feel that having the song words on the stand whilst Abbi sings, wont be seen by someone who is just listening. The clip is only on for a small amount of time and you would have to really look to be able to notice it.
  • We feel after spending time filming Abbi and getting her into the right frame of mind. That for people to say Abbi isn't very convincing is a bit unfair as she has worked hard to be able to get into the role and feel confident on camera.
  • We feel the ducks showed separation between a couple and we feel the group who said it may be just nit picking.
  • ''you could perhaps have edited the lip syncing more accurate because at 2.49 there was lip movement but no song.'' We feel this is irrelevant as she was only smiling/laughing, it wasn't meant to be singing. Therefore it was never meant to be lip syncing.

Things we would possibly take action on:
  • Split screen for the running towards of each other would be more effective than what we did.
  • We feel possibly we could have added more advance transitions, however we didn't want to go over board with the transitions and effects .

Feedback For the Final Cut Music Video

Feedback from T2-38

There is plenty of close-up shots of Abi which will meet the demands of the record label.
All of the shots used match the style of the song, with a subtle tranquility during prolonged piano sections which compliments the music well.
The desaturated clips to show the past is really effective as it adds a different dimension. We think that the acting conveys a good story combined with the shots (especially the monochrome walk between the trees and the spinning round in the field) work especially well..
Some of the shots changed too quickly for the pace of the song but overall not too bad and conveyed a good story.
Personally we would have taken out the water hitting the face as it didn't work particularly well, perhaps of replaced it with just a slow motion of the water-to-the-face rather than reversing it as well.

 Lewis, Liam & Matt T2-37

We thought that your video was really good, and portrayed the lyrics really well, meeting Goodwins point of analysis - lyrics & visuals. The lip syncing was really good and made the song believable. Also the filters on the clips are really good, showing flash backs in black and white was a good idea. The shot at the beginning with the Ed and Abi walking away from the camera to the beat worked really well.

We feel that more advanced editing could have been used, the two shots with Abi and Ed running towards each other perhaps a split screen would have been appropriate. Also there is a shot of Abi playing piano where the viewers can see the lyrics on the music stand.

samanda, ben, ryan, michael
-the pace of the shots were great as the matched the pace and mood of the song itself.
- it promotes the artist by the shots of playing the piano and close ups.
- the genre also matches the effects such as the slow fade outs and the black and white colour filter
-lip syncing was really good
- the actors and the clothing within the clip match the song type and look really good together :)
-slow motion was also really effective
-you could perhaps have edited the lip syncing more accurate because at 2.49 there was lip movement but no song.

T2-40
The video concentrates well on the story of the two characters in the video and they're relationship. They're relationship is presented to be believable and is effective. However, due to the focus completely being on the story the artist (as an individual) is not promoted equally as much as the story.
The genre and purpose of the song is clear. The use of the different filters when the artist is on her own and the flashbacks is successful in contrasting the different time period. The acting between the girlfriend and boyfriend is also confident and convincing, when singing and playing the piano, Abi needed more confidence in her performance to allow it to be convincing. The shots were edited in a clear way, use of transitions could have been a bit more complex but it was simple therefore was effective. Some of the shots i.e ending with the lamp and the ducks were quite random but all the other shots had a purpose and were used effectively.

Lesson Plan for 16/11/11

The plan for the day is to -

  • Get feedback from other groups on our final product.
  • Have a group discussion on what we felt went well and not so well.
  • Make sure blog is still up to date.
  • Talk about our digi pack.

Monday 14 November 2011

Inspiration For The Digi Pack

Images We would like to include in our Digi Pack

Things to consider when putting together the Digi pack

Things to consider:
  • The name has to be highlighted and the main focus if the artist has there back to the camera or only has small part of them self in the image.
  • The artist needs to be seen
  • Certification of video
  • Release date
  • Artist and album information
  • Ratings from a magazine

Final Cut-Music Video

After Monday 14/11/11

We have now completed are final peace of work. We have added onto the blog the video along with a small bit of feed back as to what we felt went good and bad. We have now decided to start thinking about our digipack and what images we are going to use.

Sunday 13 November 2011

Plan For Monday's Lesson 14th November

The Plan for today's lesson is to:

  • Finish off and tidy up all of the timeline so that it is smooth with the transitions as we want them with all of the footage in there that we want there to be.
  • Possibly film a bit more of Abbie in the piano room (Not Essential as we have the footage that we really need)
  • Ensure that we are totally ready to get the Music Video exported and converted ready to be uploaded and handed in to Holly
  • Watch through the video before we have finished just to make sure that we are totally happy with our product
  • Add it onto the blog and also hand one into Hollie.
  • Make sure the test footage is on the blog.
  • Get one last bit of feedback from Hollie.
  • Make sure that all of our comments have been taken into account
  • Look through the blog check list just to make sure that we have everything that we need.
  • Start to plan and think about some of our digi pack and other elements of that part

Wednesday 9 November 2011

Wednesday 9/11/11Lesson

We had hoped to be able to film close ups of Abbie and her hands playing the piano in the music room however sadly Abbie wasnt there so we were unable to follow the plan.

Due to the deadline being upcoming, we decided to get some additional footage even without Abbie so Ed and Charlotte went out and filmed Charlottes hands on the piano and do some hand close ups in order for us to get the footage done and on the timeline.

Once this was done we went back to the media room where Chris had been editing the footage together and was and then uploaded the footage and put in onto the timeline and into suitable positions.

We added on the footage of the water being thrown at Eds face. We also added a reverse transition in order to show it being thrown then going back in the water.

As a group we also added the hand playing the piano over Abbie singing. Then added more colour filters and transitions the line.

Currently we are in a position where we are very close to a completed and finished project to a good standard in our mind, and that we really just need to make the last few touch ups to the timeline. We all feel really pleased with what we have achieved so far and hope that come the end of Mondays lesson we will have completed our music video ready for us to upload and hand in our finished project.

Talk With Tom

During Wednesday Lesson, Tom came in and saw our film. We received feedback from him and he gave us some possible things that we could consider and these points were:

  • We had a very good range images
  • Possibly making it all black and white
  • Change the color filters so it fits more into the time line
  • Make sure nothing jumps and that there are smooth transitions throughout
  • Possibly add some additional colour and dissolve filters to add to the effectiveness of the video
We took on board what Tom said, we changed to filters and realized it actually fits better with them like that. We have also polished up some of the time line and made sure that things are merged. Although Tom did want us to have black and white over all of it, we decided not to so we can clearly show the elements within the video that represent the past and the future.

Monday 7 November 2011

Wednesday 9/11/11

Plan for the lesson-
-Film on the piano and more close ups of hands
-Edit together the last of the footage
-Be ready to hand in our final project
-Carry on blogging through the lesson

During Monday 7/11/11 Lesson

During the lesson we spoke to Hollie and Nick, to get feedback on how we can improve our music video more. We were told we needed to add more clips and more transitions.

Due to certain circumstances Abbie was unable to be there which meant we wernt able to film anymore. However we managed to edit together some of the footage previously shot. We still need to add alot more clips though,

Talk With Nick

During Monday lesson we spoke to Nick and got feedback on how are film was going. The feedback we received was:

  • To get rid of two clips at the start that didn't fit in and seemed irrelevant.
  • Add more filters
  • Add more transitions
  • Get close ups of hands on the piano
We have taken all the comments on board and have arranged to film the hands on the piano in Wednesday lesson. Filters and transitions are now being add and we currently working on them.

Friday 4 November 2011

Monday 7/11/11

Our plan for the lesson is, Charlotte to start the editing process and adding in the additional footage previously shot.

Chris will film Abbie and Ed in the music room for the last part of footage we need. This will take half the lesson, therefore when Chris, Abbie and Ed return we will all look at the footage shot.

We will then carry on the editing process, just before the end the lesson we will discuss our thoughts and feelings as to what the video looks like and if we think we can meet the deadline.

How are additional filming went

As a group we all turned up to lesson at 2.40, we picked up all the equipment and decided that we would stay local for more time to film. The guided bus route was the closest place and our origonal idea so this seemed perfect for what we wanted.

We all took a walk down and put all our stuff down and started the filming.

Ed and Abbie were the actors, while Charlotte and Chris took turn in filming and giving directions.

We managed to get some moving footage, close ups, extreme close ups and general shots. These were all things people said we needed to add in or think about.

We also got some clips of Ed and Abbie arguing which meant we could use this to show they have broke up.

Due to the piano room being used we were unable to get the footage.

We were lucky to get all of it done before it got to dark. On Monday lesson Charlotte plans to start editing the footage together. Whilst Ed, Abbie and Chris will go into the music room and get the very last of the piano footage.

As a group we know our deadline is Friday 11th which means we only have Monday and Wednesday to edit and be in a position were we are happy. If by Mondays lesson we feel we aren't going to make the deadline, we will arrange a time to come in as a group and spend that extra bit of time to really give it the best chance we can.

Wednesday 2 November 2011

Additonal Filming/ Thursdays Lesson 3/11/11

As a group we have decided our additional footage evening will be Thursday. We will take the camera out at 2.40 and will start filming early so it doesn't get to dark. We will meet at the lesson ready to leave straight away  We hope to get:
  • Running up and spinning around footage(Tracking)
  • Hand shot holding hands
  • close up of piano
  • close ups on the bridge
  • close ups of leaves
  • close ups in general
  • movement shots
We also plan to take out a stills camera with us, so we are able to get some pictures ready for our digi pack.

We need to remember to collect and bring-
  • Costumes
  • Camera
  • Stills Camera
  • Trypod
  • Music
  • Lyrics

Feedback From Other Groups On The Rough Cut - The Not So Good Points

They are:

  • The Fades and Dissolves could be smoother
  • Can be seen as not very realistic
  • More close up's of piano
  • More effects need to be used
  • Some more shot variety
  • More close ups of Abi, hands and other things
  • Use moving shot types
  • Use Pan's and Tracks
  • Make more of the fact that she has been dumped - key part of the narrative, significant when she is alone - Abi and Ed could be walking and Ed disappears
  • Make some of the shots longer in their length going between narrative and piano
  • Sometimes when Abi was just playing piano with no lyrics, she looked a bit bored, so could add additional footage to cover that or re film it
  • Could be greater variety of shot types
  • It was good!

Feedback from other groups- Good Points

Good-
  • Lip syncing was good
  • Good Shots
  • Like the past in black and white
  • Twist at the end
  • Cuts really good
  • Love Flashbacks
  • Clear storyline
  • Shots between girl and boy are clear

Tuesday 1 November 2011

Wednesday 2/11/11

The plan for the lesson is to all sit down and watch the music videos everyone has produced.

We will then wait and get feed back from other groups so we can see how we can improve our video.

We will also book the camera for Thursday evening if all the group is agreed.

Some more blogging will also take place during the lesson with additional ideas and thoughts.

Sunday 30 October 2011

Plan For When Back After Half Term

This week, the objectives are to:

  • Get Test Footage up onto blog *
  • Get Rough Cut onto the blog after watching other groups pieces
  • Plan shooting on an afternoon/ evening and think carefully about shot types and ensure that we will be incorporating a lot of close up shots, some random and cheesy footage and also moving shots so that the entire video is not static and therefore makes it more interesting for the viewers and our target audience
  • Book for the camera on Thursday?!
  • Shoot some additional footage for the real music video itself partially according to the feedback from other groups
  • Edit together the captured footage into the timeline and finish off our music video
  • Begin to start on the digi pack and other elements for our project

Target Audience Research: Expectations and Viewing Habits

The target audience for a music video will depend on the expectations of the audience. Everyone will have a different feeling towards a different type  of music therefore no one will feel the same, this being an extremely important of music in general as there is such a diverse range of music all appealing to different people in different ways. The expectation when seeing a music video is that it relates to the music of the group and that it gives connotations that appear appropriate so that the target audience ensuring that they are enticed enjoy the video in a great way.

The typical expectations when listening the our music video would be, slow, romantic, boy and girl, cheesy and quiet emotional.

If you had a rock and roll song you would expect a lot of band shots and a group to be performing as this is a strong element to that genre and the attachments that go with it.

These would all be examples of the target audience.

Viewing habits would be habits the audience get into. They're quite like expectations, however these are more to do with seeing the same thing over and over again due to the elements within the video that cause the viewers to become obsessed in a positive way.

Research into filters and special effects

As a group we had ideas of what kind of special effects and filters we would like to include.

Slow motion was an idea we deicde on mainly because we wanted the past to be quiet slow and give more of an impact towars the audience watching. It also gave it more of a romance feel to it. Here shows how to do it on Final cut:

We also planned on using fading in and out. We came up with this as some of the parts weren't as smooth as planned and we wanted something to smooth it out for us. So we watched a video which showed us how to do it:

There was a clip which had a light in, we wanted the light to go out and put the footage at the end. So we decided to look into how we can do this. We typed into youtube and watched a video to see how long it would take to do this and how hard it would be. Due to us trying to attempt to and not being able to. We decided to change our minds.

Lastly we decided to look into black and white to represent the past. So we looked into a video to show us how to do this:

Thursday 20/10/11

The main plan for this lesson is to :
  • Upload the test footage to the blog and add any additional notes that we want to
  • Upload the Rough cut footage to the blog and QuickTime it
  • Check the blog is full and complete
  • Add any pictures also to the blog that can be used as part of the planning stage

After Wednesday lesson 19/10/11

During the lesson we all had a chance to do some editing to share out some of the work. Charlotte checked along with Chris to see what we had to do and what our objectives were to do during the lesson and what still needed to be added to the blog. Charlotte and Chris also cut down some of the footage for the end part to the song which seemed to fit in really well.

Chris  did some editing and also uploaded some work to the blog. Both Charlotte and Chris made sure that we had got to the point at the end where we felt that we were happy with the product.

As a group we feel that we are in a position where we will be able to show the class the work we have produced, it is not a perfect music video yet but we feel happy that it can be shown and critiqued by our class mates.

Abbie also had ago at editing along with Ed, both of them also spent some time on the blog adding how they felt and how they feel the project has been going.

However Charlotte and Chris still feel that we may need to add some more locations and possibly use some of the time in the green/black screen room to add to the current footage that we have. More general locations are needed we feel to be able to add a bit more of variety into the footage and make it a bit more exiting for the intented viewers.

Filming Emotions

Charlotte-
Due to being absent on the evenings we had to film. I did alot of planning towards what needed to be filmed and when. So hopefully that made up for the absences. However i did do loads of test filming with the group and spent time putting input into what we needed to have done. For example making sure the background was clear when filming, Making sure that the background had nothing we didnt want in there. I have also spent some time editing for the group and being part of the decision to slowing down the footage and making sure that we have clear cuts between sequences.

I found that when doing the test footage, what you thought you had on the camera was sometimes not what was on the screen when you uploaded it. I also found you had to do about 15 filming shots before you had one good one which was ok to be able to use. Through planning a lot ahead and having a picture of what you want it helps a lot and you are able to concentrate on the small details.

Chris-

I have found the process of planning and production so far more challenging than I had originally envisaged it to be. However, the main thing has been for me to ensure that I have worked through any tough patches and kept my motivation to make a good quality and high standard of music video. When out doing the filming, there are many obstacles that need to be considered and when doing filming in the evening obviously one of the main problems was that the light drew in quite quickly meaning that we could only film for a certain length of time or else we would lose continuity if the light changed all throughout the video without us wanting it to. Additionally, when out doing the filming I found it occasionally difficult trying to use some different techniques, for instance, trying vertigo, slow zoom out to look effective and also doing moving shots as I had to take into consideration other people being around, the surface that I was on and also the conditions. After doing the main section of filming and then beginning the editing process, we realised that in some respects some additional footage would have been helpful however, we made use of all of the footage that we had, ensured to try and use some effects to create a more interesting music video from the viewers perspective and make the product fit well together with some good transitions and fades. Although the editing can take a while before it is to a stage where you are happy with it, one of the best things that I did was just to perceiver and have the objective that we really want to make a good quality and professional looking music video.

Acting Emotions

when it came to filming there where some challenges i had to over come as an actress. These difficulties where things such as learning the lyrics to the song, to overcome this we played the song out loud on chris's phone so i could sing along to it, which worked well as i could show the emotion from the song easier. The other advantage was that i couldn't hear my own voice so i didn't end up laughing and wasting the little filming time that we had. I also had to make sure Ed wasn't visable as he made me laugh every time he looked at me. This problem kept on occurring with the strange looks we got from onlookers especially the yellow back pack Spanish tourists. i also had to remember to do my hair the same each time we filmed and bring the same clothes, this wasn't so hard to remember and didn't really become an issue. it made it a lot easier to act as my group where extreamly professional about it and did not muck around. Over all i thought the whole thing was a success, however if we where given more time i would have liked to have shot some more of the flash back moments and get a closer shot of ducks.

Attempt to contact artist

We attempted to contact The Hush Sound to show them the video we have composed to their song You are the Moon. We found their email address at THEHUSHSOUNDBAND@GMAIL.COM this was the email address they quoted on their myspace account. We are still waiting on their reply with comments on how they think it fits in with their type of music and the feelings they wanted to portray to the listener.

Classification Research

When we began the music video project we had to think about the classification and the themes within music videos and how they might affect the viewer.

When looking at some music videos early on we viewed a shocking video, Rock DJ by Robbie Williams and found out that rightly it was only to be shown well after the water shed due to the components and actions that take place within the video.

This is the video:

This video could be seen as very disturbing to some audiences and so would be distributed with a classification that mirrors this. When creating a music video this has to be considered and during our production process so far we have thought about what may and may not be suitable to include within our video.

A typical element which can cause a change in classification is language, however as that is not present within our video this is not necessary and our digi pack will highlight that our music video is suitable for all.

Analysis Of 2 Students Music Videos

This Music Video, 13 P1-01 - Butch Walker  - Too famous to get fully dressed was done in 2010 by a group of students in a band style situation and they had to appeal to the specific genre, which was indie rock and rock/ rock pop.

Plan for Wednesday 19th October Lesson

For this morning we need to continue with editing of the footage and ensuring that everything is beginning to come together in a continuous way with good continuity lasting throughout. We need to consider that we only have this lesson and tomorrow before the rough cut deadline so really need the editing with effects and transitions to be as smooth as possible and ready with the possibility for some minor tweaking on Thursday's lesson.

Additionally we need to upload some test footage to the blog. This will include the footage of Ed on piano, some of Chris and also some of both of Ed and Abbie.

While this is going on, we obviously need to continue adding to the blog and be starting to think about the other elements of our music video project, such as the Digi Pack and the DVD.

Monday 17 October 2011

Monday 17/10/11

This lesson we have done some editing.  Charlotte, Chris and Abbie have added in some of the techniques for example Timing, Colour scale and fading in and out. We have done nearly half of the editing process and still have some additional footage that needs to be added to our timeline.

We still need to make sure the transitions our smooth and not jumping from footage to footage.

Looking through the footage we have decided that we still need to get footage of people walking past. We will need Abbie to film in the green screen room. Then we will slow the people down whilst they are walking past.

We are now in the process of only having 3 hours left of editing before the rough cut deadline. We hope that by next lesson we will be at stage where we only have a small amount to do in order to keep thursdays lesson free for last minute touch ups.

Editing Process

While editing the different techniques we used were:
  • Fading in and out
  • Colour Corrector (Grey Scale)
  • Timing (Slow Motion)

  • Colour Correcter
We have used the colour correcter to show the difference between the past and the present. While Ed and Abbie are together we have used the colour correcter. When its just Abbie we have left it in colour.

    Timing
We have used slow motion in ours and lowered it down to 60 when using the colour corrector. It highlights the significance of the different clips.

    Fading in and Out
We have used fading in and out to make the pictures run smoothly.

Friday 14 October 2011

The Things That We Have Not Decided to Include and/or Change

From previous planning during the earlier stages in the music video project after pitching and deciding on our ideas for our music video we had preliminarily discussed using dancers and incorporating a dance routine to show and evoke the emotion of the main protagonist (Abbie) and to show explicitly how the main singer feels. After starting to film and get some real footage to put into our music video timeline on Final Cut Express, we have not actually filmed anything in the way of dancers due to time pressures and also that we felt after viewing some of the initial footage that it may not fit into our video as we felt that the main focus should be on the main character (Abbie) and her lost lover (Ed) so we decided to maintain that particular theme and take out the idea of the dance routine.

We also talked about using a neckless which would represent and symbolise something of importance that the main protagonist (Abbie) was given once her other half had passed on. We have not yet been able to find a way in which we can fit this into the narrative where it is significant and a key part of the narrative.

As a group we also made the decision while out on filming to change some of the locations due to feeling as though they were better suited if in different places for the parts within the music video that we wanted to use. For example we decided to use a park with some swings, throwing leaves and having a playful fight underneath a tree and looking into the river alone. All of these were used due to searching, going back and looking at other locations on the Mac's and then decided, went to filming and felt that these decisions were more beneficial.

We are yet to get a crowd of people running behind and the main artist being in the middle and in the green screen, however after the rough cut viewing, it may be possible for us if our class members feel that it would be beneficial, to go out and film these elements.

However due to these changes we feel they were made for the better of our project and feel that we could potentially add them in if needed.
